Let’s look at the reasons to use a device specifically designed to deliver cold application for medical procedures.
Utilizing cold can help you take less pain medication. Many patient have allergies to pain medication and cannot use them at all. For those patients, cold therapy is their only source of pain management.
The more you can move the joint, the better the blood flow and the better the bloodflow, the better the healing.
Ice/Water units
Ice and water go in a cooler. The cooler connects to a pad that’s shaped to best fit your body part. The cooler has a small motor which runs the cold water through the pad. You must change the ice and water periodically to keep it to temperature.
Important Note
With all Cold Therapy devices you must have a barrier between the cold pad and the skin. You must do skin checks and report and skin changes.Cold Compression Therapy
New additions to cold therapy include adding a compression feature which makes it superior to standard cold therapy units. The compression feature actually works to provide light compression to the joint as well as the cold to push any swelling out of the joint. Priority Medical utilizes the BioCryo device which uses a cold gel pad connected with a small compressor. THis eliminates the need for ice and water. The gel pack goes in the refridgerator and after 20 minutes is ready to use.
